William Johnson

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services

William Johnson knew that he was having a difficult time communicating with others, but the bigger challenge was deciding to ask for help.

William was referred to Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley by Elizabeth Whelpdale, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor at the Rehabilitation Services Commission.

Liz Purves, DHHS Placement Specialist and ASL Interpreter said “When William started in the job placement program, he was homeless and living in a shelter.  He had a difficult time hearing what people were saying and that really hurt his confidence.”  When he eventually asked for assistance and received hearing aids, his confidence level improved tremendously.  William could hear and communicate much more effectively.

As he applied for jobs online, he began following up with potential employers and he attended all of the job search meetings.   William visited many employers in person, showing them face-to-face how eager he was to get a job.

At this point in his job search, William was able to move from the homeless shelter to the Booth House, and he continued to look for permanent employment.  He was dedicated and committed, working with Liz on a regular basis to apply for many different positions.  Eventually, his hard work paid off and he successfully completed two interviews and was hired at Home Depot in Trotwood.

He was initially hired as a Lot Attendant but due to William’s excellent job performance, Home Depot created a new position for him as a Pro Garden Loader.  William has been named Employee of the Month at the store and now lives independently in an apartment.  He continues to work hard and strive for more responsibility
in his job.

William believes that people should not be embarrassed to ask for help.  He is glad that he’s now able to communicate more effectively and feels confident in his new position at work.  He’s looking forward to a
bright future.
